This month, our guests are US poet Thomas Lynch and Galway born Karl MacDermott plus OPEN-MIC!

THOMAS LYNCH
Thomas Lynch is the author of five collections of poems, three books of essays and a book of stories, Apparition & Late Fictions. The Undertaking won the American Book Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award. His work has appeared in The Atlantic and Granta, The New Yorker and Esquire, Poetry and The Paris Review, and has been the subject of two documentary films, Learning Gravity by Cathal Black and PBS Frontline’s The Undertaking.. Whence & Whither, a miscellany in four genres has just been published and The Depositions – New & Seleccted Essays will be published by Norton in Autumn, 2019. He lives in Michigan and Moveen, West Clare.

KARL MacDERMOTT
Karl MacDermott was born in Galway. Developing a passion for comedy in the mid-1980’s he was amongst the new breed of stand-up comedians in the Ireland of that era. In 1988 he helped co-found The Comedy Cellar at The International Bar in Dublin with Barry Murphy, Ardal O’Hanlon and Kevin Gildea. After appearing in his own one man comedy show at The Peacock in 1989 and having had successful runs in The Edinburgh Fringes of 1991-93 and also appearing at The Cats Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny, by the late 1990’s he stepped back from performing and concentrated on writing.

Over the last twenty years he has written extensively for radio including the comedy series’ Gone But Forgotten and Here’s Johnny on RTE Radio 1 and The Mahaffys on BBC Radio 4.

He has also written two Plays of the Week for RTE Radio 1 – Friday Night and Conversations in The Dark.

In addition he has written a six-part comedy drama for RTE Two Television, Straight to Video, and has contributed many satirical articles to The Irish Times.

His debut novel The Creative Lower Being was published by Killynon House Books in 2007. His second book, an e-book Ireland’s Favourite Failure was published on Amazon Kindle in 2014. A third book, a book of short comic fiction called Juggling With Turnips has just being published by Eyewear Publishing.

‘On the nail’ literary gathering is currently unfunded.

 Everyone is invited to take part in the open-mic after the main event, poets, storytellers, musicians and writers. Even if you don’t write you are welcome to bring something along to read. The night begins at 8.00pm and admission is free. So join us on the night and make this event something special.

NOTE: Our special authors book table will again be in operation, so if you want your book, CD’s etc publicised make sure you are represented on the table. Contact Dominic Taylor at 087 2996409 to make arrangements.
